Driving
by Hideo Yokokawa

From Harrington Park,
along Hudson River
heading for the West Point upriver
the car goes on running and running
with songs by Peter, Paul and Mary
at a speed of 70 miles an hour.

Climbing and descending the huge hills
covered by the vivid green over the whole surface,
cutting across level grounds,
detouring the foothills and again climbing a hill, the car rushes.

Suddenly,
a huge panorama of
piled up ultramarine, white, light blue and green
spreads out undulating horizontally.

The road curves gently to right and left.
The car strains but keeps running and running, and then
runs down towards a valley floor

All of a sudden again
a huge sheer precipice of reddish brown
GIGANTICALLY
spreads out before our eyes

Nature itself over here is huge and wide.
And under the graceful land surface,
a terrifying beastlike power is hidden.

Proceeding along the right bank of Hudson River
with the songs by Peter, Paul and Mary,
the car keeps running,
climbing a large hill,
further climbing the next hills.
