Alone in Hanoi

I thought I would leave you
To walk by our lake gently
To caress the leaves of our trees
To pray for us at our temple
Of the seated elephants,
To listen to the shrieks of the baboons
Drowning the sound of stifled moans
Distant and desperate
But you left me here instead
To stagger past our lake
To tug at no leaves on bare trees
To listen to the wails of the baboons
And to moan at our temple
Alone in Hanoi.
