A summer morning in Virginia in the early
1940s. My mother and I are out in the yard,
in the dewy tangle of wild grass and rambler
roses. The Japanese quince that we called
“arnet” is in bloom, fuchsia flowers strung
along its branches.
Rose scent is sweet in the golden air.
A rooster crows, lonesome and far away..
