I am nine years old, watching smoke from
the wash-day fires rise under the wild plum
trees. 1945.
Then it’s a spring morning the year I’m ten.
I am leaving that place of woodsmoke and
white plum blossoms, never to return.
Not until Time curves in upon itself and
1945 comes back. again.
