Bagging this fine game
is harder than, say,
pheasant or rabbit
catching. Tracking tells
only where one was
before you got there,
can teach you likely
places, maybe, not
find one for you. Traps
are equally poor-
can break a back, choke
what has to breathe-no
use to anyone
dead. Chasing one down
is hopeless. You can't.
It will elude you,
leave you in the woods
out of the running.
You have to hold still
and wait and listen
very quietly
so a poem can
come into your hands.
