Poems of Samuel E. Stone

Bears and Bees

From the porch sitting in the rocking chair,
I got a glimpse of something big and black,
to my surprise it was this big old mama bear,
just limping along like she stepped on a tack.

The bear was in the woods by the mowed field,
Summer was about over the beginning of fall,
moving hesitatingly using the trees as a shield,
standing on her hind legs she seemed so tall.

She came to the winding river, raging in motion,
then all of a sudden she decided to go for a swim,
the whitecaps splashing reminded me of the ocean,
suddenly out of the woods came little bear twins.

The sky was so bright feeling the heat of the Sun,
weeds by the river in bloom like Spring flowers,
cubs watching their mother having so much fun,
jumped in splashing about like it was a shower.

After their swim they rested under the old oak tree,
the sky clouded over and suddenly it began to rain,
looking up the bears discovered a hive full of bees,
and went squealing back to their mother in pain.
