After Many Words, A Long Time

Shades lapse somewhere near me,
Near the bed.
Be mild with me.
Light slips in my loosened clothes
Quietly as they fall, they fall,
And I am shaking.
I raise my hands to my face so I will not see
You when you come to me.
I thought-
Before this hour broke over us, descrying
Love's animal and shy body-
I thought myself wholly disclosed
Because we had for so long spoken the truth
With one another
And words given are more than kisses, I thought.

But now I think you will touch me.
Yes, as you take light hold of my wrists
And lift my hands. With what unspeakable care!
Facing your eyes, I see promises.
Yet I cannot tell what will come of this.
