We Walk the Same Road

We walk the same road now
we serve the same master,
though our paths were so different
my friend, till the end.
Your ascent
past sparkling mountain streams,
to the tinkle of innocent youth,
in tribal lightness traipsing,
crested in cruel fire baptismal
from along my road;
where I had come long before you;
with the earthern Gangetic weight
of alluvial centuries
bearing richly down.
Won't the measured gravity,
the flat certitude
of less effervescent climes,
where power lies and is blind,
ever see,
that your road,
and my road,
that our road, my friend,
is a road that has been taken
before.
